Jimmy learned to tap from his dad, Jimmy Payne, who taught tap and afro-carribean to thousands of students for over seventy years. Jimmy continues this legacy by both performing and teaching tap dance. Jimmy has taught weekly scheduled classes in Chicago for over 25 years. He currently teaches at American Rhythm Center, Red Clay Dance, Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, and Columbia College. Jimmy has performed with Bill Russo’s Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Chicago Human Rhythm Project, and Chicago Jazz Festival. He’s also performed with legendary jazz artist Von Freeman, and 21st Century Jazz Review, who he accompanied on a trip to India for a series of concerts. He’s also received an award for best performance in a concert series from Black Theatre Alliance Awards.
