About the Piece

A House Unbuilt is currently developing a social choreography in collaboration with 104 communities along the Mississippi River. This past September they visited Clarksdale, Mississippi—some say the birthplace of Chicago—and began to build relationships with residents there. These relationships are the foundation of a specific connection with the city of Chicago and the deep-rooted dynamics of race

that persist in both regions, north and south.

In their Elevate performance, A House Unbuilt will use the body to dig deeper into the themes that were shared and discovered while in Clarksdale. They will then invite the audience to think and move through our own fears and impossibilities felt in the body, as we build relationships with each other through sharing.

This performance and dialogue is part of the larger project Relay of Voices: The Great River Run that involves A House Unbuilt traveling the length of the Mississippi River on foot next Summer and Fall.

A House Unbuilt (AHU) uses movement and the body to engage and investigate the social fabric of rooted communities. Drawing on vocabulary from dance, sport, and everyday life, AHU seeks to un-build the learned architecture of the body to reveal the insights and knowledge housed there.

AHU operates as a movement laboratory to explore and effect incremental change in performers and audience alike. It also serves as an archive of public movement that can be openly accessed, explored and creatively utilized as movement of community and culture.

A House Unbuilt has presented work at the MCA Chicago, Gallery 400, the DeCordova Sculpture & Art Museum, the McColl Center in Charlotte, NC, the Chicago Cultural Center, Defibrillator Gallery, and various homes and public spaces in Louisiana, Illinois, and North Carolina. The company has also received honors such as the Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, DCASE Theatre & Dance Residency, High Concept Labs Sponsored Artist, Chicago Artist Month Featured Artist, and Chicago Artist Month HATCH Resident Artist. For it's new project Relay of Voices, A House Unbuilt is working in

partnership with the Mississippi River Parkway Commission, the Mississippi River Cities  and Towns Initiative, the Louisiana Department of Tourism, the Water Institute of the Gulf, the Mississippi Park Connection, and 104 towns and cities up and down the Great River.
