Julia Rhoads will be discussing her current work for Lucky Plush Productions through which she is investigating ideas of ownership, materiality, copyright, and originality as they apply to the dance field in the digital age. As media becomes increasingly easy to reproduce and propagate worldwide, questions around these concepts as they relate to movement and the body are vital to raise.  Join us to discuss this timely and relevant topic, as people are increasingly appropriating and responding to everything that is available online (such as Beyonce who recently used Fosse's choreographic material in a questionable fashion).

Topics include:

• What defines "fair use" in dance?
• Is it permissible to "borrow" choreographic devices if the movement is reinvented?
• If someone "stylistically" references a choreographer, should it be acknowledged as a derivative work, or is it what naturally occurs through dance education and lineage?
• How does embodied "sampling" bring up difficult questions with respect to identity politics?

Rhoads and Lucky Plush Productions hopes to initiate a new bodily discourse that speaks directly to these problems.

ABOUT JULIA:

Julia Rhoads is a choreographer who has been described as “Chicago’s resident surrealist” in the Chicago Sun Times.  As Artistic Director of Lucky Plush Productions, she has created over 25 original works with the company since 1999, including performance installations, 2 dance films and 6 evening-length productions.  Rhoads’ independent work has been presented in venues and universities across the U.S including commissions for Alaska Dance Theater, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, and twice for River North Chicago Dance Company.  She has also directed and choreographed for theater, performance and film companies including Redmoon Theater, Walkabout Theater, Hyperdelic, and the collective M5.  Rhoads is formerly a company member of the Salt Creek Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, a performer and artistic associate of XSIGHT! Performance Group.  She has received a Cliff Dwellers Foundation Award for Choreography, two Illinois Arts Council Fellowships for Choreography, a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship, a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, and a fellowship from the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography.  She earned a BA in History from Northwestern University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute Chicago, and she is currently on faculty in the theater department at Columbia College Chicago.  For more information about Lucky Plush Productions, visit www.luckyplush.com.
