Rough Cuts: Dancers Creating Dance for Film

10am - 2pm each day

Goal: This workshop will inspire participants to regard video as a spur to re-think their choreography in visually specific terms and in relationship to various locations; the workshop will specifically address the dance video making process in terms of images, intent, intensity, and intimacy.

SCHEDULE:
Day One: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1
10am - 2pm
Location: The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, 1306 S. Michigan Ave.

Day One Theme: Camera equipment and technique overview, key style concepts, viewing session of strong dance on film excerpts, hands-on experimentation filming one another dancing in pairs and groups of three.


Day Two: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2
10am - 2pm
Location: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St.
Dance Studio, and other locations in the Cultural Center

Day Two Theme: Case Study - how to adapt a piece of stage choreography for the camera. A work of Hedwig Dances will be performed live and simultaneously taped by the participants who will act as the film crew. Learning objectives include how to work with the dancers to get desired effects, and the impact of working in various locations.

PARTICIPATION:
Open to dancers/ choreographers who have a professional level experience with choreography. Previous experience with video equipment is preferred, but not required. Pre-registration is mandatory via an application process. All participants must be available for both days of the session.

Walk ins will not be permitted.

Fee: $50; Cash or check, payable at the door.

NOTE: Participants need to bring their own digital video camera, or make arrangements with CDF for a rental camera in advance.


Rough Cuts: Dancers Creating Dance for Film is presented by the Chicago Dancemakers Forum in partnership with Hedwig Dances, Jan Bartoszek, and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
