What does it mean to be an independent solo artist? How is that career trajectory connected to a larger community? And how does the solo artist craft their own legacy?

Asimina Chremos has cultivated a deeply interconnected relationship, in multiple ways, with much of the Chicago dance community for the past twelve years. As the prime mover of Silverspace, a 5-year-old live/work space in Wicker Park, she is witness to the development of new dance pieces by a variety of creative artists in her living room on a daily basis. As former dance editor for Time Out Chicago, she has had her finger on the pulse of the dance community for the last five years, and, prior to that she served as Artistic Director at Links Hall.

Through all these many permutations, Asimina has also continued to craft and build an impressive and highly skilled practice as a solo movement artist. On Monday, December 14, Asimina will offer a salon conversation that explores these many layers of connectivity. She will show segments of her ongoing video documentation work to explore the interdependent role between one artist and the web of community, both real and virtual. Additional topics address career trajectory - when an artist is ready to move on, what do they leave behind? The conversation is sure to be richly layered. Join us!

ABOUT ASIMINA

Called "a strong, elegant, long-limbed dancer who moves with a sense of stark drama and genuine lyricism" (Chicago Sun-Times), Asimina Chremos began her career with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater in the early 1980's and later forayed into studies with improvisation teachers such as Simone Forti and Ishmael Houston-Jones. Approaching dance as art, she creates abstractions, narratives and kinetic sculptural forms across stages, studios and spaces of all types and sizes. She has won awards for her choreographic development from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Chicago Dancemakers Forum. She has shared her enthusiasm and curiosity with students at the Chicago Moving Company, Columbia College Chicago, Lou Conte Dance Studio, Northwestern University and many other studios and schools. Chremos served as artistic director of Links Hall from 2000 to 2005; between 2005 and 2009 she was Dance editor at Time Out Chicago magazine. In addition to her live solo performances, current projects include the daily dance video log CircadianDancer; site specific performances as microgig with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; and Echo Den, a sound-and-movement duo with vocalist Carol Genetti.
