CDF October Salon: About Legacy Monday, October 26 7:00 - 9:00 pm FREE! Beverages and Light Refreshments will be provided
Museum of Contemporary Art 220 East Chicago Ave. Enter at the Stage entrance, located at the Northwest corner of the building Join us for this special Salon devoted to a conversation on the legacies and influences of Merce Cunningham, Pina Bausch, and Michael Jackson, exploring the convergence of all of their deaths in the past few months, and the odd yet compelling connections between their influences. The salon will feature panelists who have unique and informed perspectives to speak about each of the artist's legacies. By simultaneously examining Cunningham's post-modern legacy, Jackson's enormous influence on popular dance and European innovation by Bausch, the discussion and video presentation will give participants an opportunity to explore and reflect on personal thoughts about legacy and renewal of dance, via a broad variety of voices and genres.
Panelist Speakers Include: Susan Manning: (Bausch) Northwestern University professor and dance scholar Susan Manning will offer insights gained while writing her soon to be published "in memoriam" essay for "TDR: The Drama Review: A Journal of Performance Studies." Paige Cunningham: (Cunningham) Paige Cunningham, a former dancer with the Cunningham company and Cunningham technique instructor offers perspective from within the dance studio. How does technique and vocabulary continue, and what is the responsibility for instructors?
Michele Simmons: (Jackson) Michele Simmons was a dancer and collaborator on numerous Michael Jackson projects during the 1970's and 1980's, as a featured dancer in several Jackson 5 TV specials, "The Wiz" and music videos including "Thriller." Simmons will provide insight into Jackson's methods and thoughts on his ascension to stardom. Bonnie Brooks, Chair of The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, will moderate the panel discussion.
