Joy Davis
greenhouse artist, 2011

artist biography
Joy Davis graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Performing Arts through College Scholars, an interdisciplinary honors program. Her independently designed curriculum consisted of a study in dance performance, choreography, and pedagogy, as well as theater, visual arts, and performance art. Her thesis production entitled "...SHIFT..." was the first of now seven evening-length works she has produced and directed in Knoxville and Chicago. She performed and choreographed with the UT Dance Company, Circle Modern Dance, Art n' Motion Aerial Dance, and Go Contemporary Dance Works in Knoxville. Her intrigue with multi-media collaboration led her to co-found the Birdhouse Laboratories, a successful art collective, gallery and performance venue, as well as the three-time annual artist festival, Knoxville Convergence. She served as Executive Artistic Director of Circle Modern Dance, was on dance faculty at the University of Tennessee, and directed the creative movement for children program at the Community School of the Arts. Joy regularly collaborates with Meg Anderson of Kinetic Dust, has worked with Erica Mott, Redmoon Theater, and Striding Lion Performance group in Chicago. She has traveled to and lived in the Netherlands three times to study the Countertechnique with Anouk van Dijk, the technique's originator, and the Alexander Technique with Tom Koch, an acclaimed practitioner. These two methods, along with various forms of yoga and the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, greatly influence her movement and teaching styles. Joy works as a free-lance choreographer, director, and yoga instructor. She is thrilled and honored to create work through the Greenhouse Program!

during the CDF year

For her Greenhouse project, Joy developed material for the creation of a work called, The Queen (working title).  Through the fusion of sleight-of-hand card magic, the Brazilian martial art form of Capoeria, and dance theater, the piece explored a physical, musical and illusory dialogue between Queen and Jester.

Davis worked with Jonathan Meyer as her mentor. Meyer is the Artistic Director of Khecari Dance Theatre .
