Justin Cabrillos
greenhouse artist, 2011

artist biography
Justin Cabrillos is a choreographer, writer, and performer. Drawing on elements of movement, performance art, poetry, and sound art, he investigates how alphabetic and gestural language shape the movements of the body. Through his work, he re-imagines the relationship between language and the body. Cabrillos received his MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the recipient of a CAAP Grant and a fellowship at Ox-Bow School of Art. He was an IN>TIME Incubation Series artist-in-residence at the Chicago Cultural Center, and he will be a 2011 LinkUP Artist at Links Hall. He recently collaborated with Every House Has a Door in a performance for artCENA in Rio De Janeiro.

during the CDF year
For his Greenhouse Project, Justin explored the intersections between language and the body, researching and developing material for a new work entitled, Troupe, a solo movement piece, with voice and text, which draws from children's games, disciplinary techniques, and the life of P.T. Barnum.

Justin's Greenhouse mentor was Lin Hixson, artistic director of Every House Has a Door and former director of Goat Island Performance Group.
