GREENHOUSE APPLICATION

CDF is not currently accepting applications  for the Greenhouse Program. Please visit this webpage again in 2013 for more information on the next round of available Greenhouse applications.

ABOUT THE GREENHOUSE PROGRAM

Greenhouse  is a new program of the Chicago Dancemakers Forum that responds to the need for more mentorship and financial support opportunities for emerging choreographers in the Chicago dance community. The Greenhouse Program promotes artistic development in emerging choreographers through financial support for the creation of new work and by fostering a mentorship relationship from an established/mid-career artist in the city.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2011 GREENHOUSE AWARDEES

In January 2011, five artists were awarded $5000 each for the creation of new work.  Of this amount, $4000 was unrestricted (to be used at the discretion of the emerging artist), and $1000 was awarded to a mentor.  Additional support included: electronic marketing via the CDF website and e-blasts during the grant period; a group feedback session in April with the other Greenhouse Artists, Consortium Members, and Mentors; and a modestly produced, shared concert at the culmination of the program in June 2011.

Much like CDF's year-long Lab Artist Award program, the intent of the six-month Greenhouse program is to support artistic development in the community's emerging artist population, and the strongest applications will clearly state how funds will be used in support of this goal.  Greenhouse Artists may elect to use the funds to pay themselves, pay dancers and/or collaborators, rent rehearsal space, etc.  In keeping with the mission of the program, greenhouse artists are discouraged from using a large percentage of their overall budget for promotional expenses, website design, etc. Permanent equipment purchases are not allowed.

ELIGIBILITY

For the purposes of the Greenhouse Program, potential applicants are encouraged to define the category of "emerging artist" broadly.  Generally, the consortium will be considering choreographers who have been making work professionally for 2-9 years for this award, though individuals slightly outside of this parameter are also welcome to apply.  The applicant may or may not have received creation grants in the past, but should have some presence in Chicago's dance community as indicated by self-produced or produced/commissioned works.  The applicant may have a history of making dances as an independent choreographer or through a company affiliation.

RESTRICTIONS

  • No degree-seeking students will be considered for this award.
  • Only Chicago-area residents are eligible to apply.
  • Artists previously funded by the CDF Lab Artist Program are not eligible to apply as Greenhouse Artists, though former Lab Artists are eligible to be Greenhouse Mentors.
  • $4,000 of the grant is unrestricted, and may be spent by the Greenhouse Artist in a variety of ways
  • $1,000 will be paid by CDF to your mentor.
  • Permanent equipment purchases are not allowed with the grant money.
